THE END...

some of my favourite discoveries in web 2.0 were flickr, rss and librarything. quite a few of the things i already use a fair bit so it was good to learn something new.
i think its a really good idea for library staff to learn these new things, as many of them were things you wouldnt just "come across", and would be quite useful. its always good to have a bit of general knowledge about web based applications to make it easier if patrons have questions, but then again, theres so much to learn...it would be impossible to know it all. but all up i think web 2.0 gives you a good head start.

DOWNLOADABLE AUDIO BOOKS

i had a look at the world ebook fair site, theres so much there to look at. im amazed that it's free, or cheap. this is a great idea, people should really know about it, i didnt realise it was so accessible. i would love having ebooks on my ipod to listen to at the gym etc.

PODCASTS

podcasts are cool. i use them for uni lectures if i dont want to go. i added a podcast to my bloglines account about arts and entertainment. this could be useful to keep libraries up to date with news, and be selective about what they want to get.

YOU TUBE IS FUN

youtube is the ultimate time waster. awesome for finding bits of movies, music videos and just random funny stuff.

YOU TUBE

WEB 2.0 AWARDS LIST

i went straight to the winners section and had a look at cocktail builder! ive seen sites like this before but this one is pretty cool. i especially like the section where you can add the ingredients you have at home and it gives you a list of drinks you can make! it also has a function where you can print out a menu for your party of all the drinks you can make! mmm cocktails! :)

ONLINE PRODUCTIVITY - ZOHO WRITER

i like the idea of zoho writer because being able to access documents online from any computer could be really useful...like saving my uni work on it if i have to use a public access computer somewhere and dont have any way to transport the document etc. saves me having to email documents to myself, good to have another place to store things in case my computer dies. which happens too often for my liking....

LEARNING 2.0 SANDBOX WIKI

added my link to the learning 2.0 sandbox wiki.

WIKIS

In my research this year at uni i have come across a lot of wikis. The idea is really that they are not official or necessarily accurate sources of information, and can be taken as general knowledge sources only. That said i think they are great for up to date, casual information about something, but as im told at uni NEVER REFERENCE WIKIPEDIA!!

WEB 2.0, LIBRARY 2.O

I think the future of libraries has practically neverending potential. Just from my own experience from when i was little till now, libraries have changed so much in terms of technology, architecture, friendly spaces and collections. Web 2.0 is a good tool to begin to bridge the gaps that some people find about how libraries used to be and how they are now. Even just the accessibility of sites like google have made research so much easier, and i myself have found google scholar a useful tool in my uni studies. Libraries are a kind of resource that is forced to constantly evolve and change with the times, to keep up with the increasing needs of customers...even it if takes them a little while to catch up.

DEL.ICIO.US & TECHNORATI

i found del.icio.us and technorati interesting, but again i probably wouldnt use them myself. seems like a good way to waste time on the internet though haha. when i searched for learning 2.0 i came up with some interesting blogs....but they weren't what i was looking for! :o

ROLLYO

Rollyo looks like it could be useful if you really want to narrow a search down to get specific results. i probably wouldn't bother signing up or using it though.

LIBRARY THING

Library thing is cool. Cataloging is fun, interesting to see how many other people have the same book as you. i like it.

ONLINE IMAGE GENERATOR

it was supposed to be an elephant/leopard. haha

RSS FEEDS & BLOGLINES NEWSREADER

i think this is possibly the most useful thing i've ever found.
yep.
i spend tonnes of time jumping around different websites trying to stay up to date with all kinds of things, books, movies, news, weather, blogs and blah blah blah.
this thing puts them all in one place, you just click on the one you want and it instantly gives you the updates since you last looked, all on one page, no spammy crap. outstanding!
just within the "quickpicks" that bloglines provides, i found about 15 different sites that were both fascinating and educational. look out for my dictionary.com words of the day!
i would love to spend some more time looking around to find more links, especially more australian sites for news/weather etc, also my friends' websites would be great. i joined a couple of new york times blog thingys and news feeds that are so interesting.
i honestly think i will keep using this site. 5 stars. xx

TECHNOLOGY WOoooooOOOOOOoooo

well well well. that thing that has interested me the most about technology lately would have to be my return to university studies. i was thinking...uni = lectures, tutes, notebooks.... not exactly the case anymore. during my first lecture in anthropology i am told, "dont bother coming if its hard to fit in...or you cant be bothered....all the lectures are available as audio podcasts from the onlines studies website. oh and so are the powerpoint presentations. and the study notes. and the required readings." i mean seriously, i dont even really need to go. hey, why am i bothering to buy textbooks?
but tutorials are still important, right? for discussion, constructive criticism, bouncing ideas.....not really. there are student forums for every subject, even every tutorial class - you guessed it, on the website.
i dont even need to borrow from the library, as all the journal articles, and even some books are available directly from the catalogue website from home, while im snuggly in my bed on my laptop. fantastic!
it seems that now more than ever, off campus study is becoming easier, with more accessible information, wider channels of communication and the handy dandy internet. sweeeet! xx

Still Week 3: moooore flickr

so i had a squiz at some flickr mashups and 3rd party sites, some of them seem quite good. i'd say my favourite would be mapr. i figure when you upload your own pictures to your flickr account, you add tags to show where the photos were taken. then these are converted to a world map and are clickable from there. this would be a fantastic way to document a big project like world travel, especially if your friends and family joined up and were able to follow your travels by clicking on the map. very cool. xx

LOL Cats - Taunt on Flickr - Photo Sharing!

LOL Cats - Taunt on Flickr - Photo Sharing!
This is a link to a lol cat picture. Makes me laugh out loud even when I'm all by myself haha. :)

I've never used flickr before, and I can't believe I'd never even heard of it! Fantastic way to find photos, and if more people you knew used it, it would be a great way to share things. xx

week 2:blogging

Ta Da! Blog created wooooo. I am blog master. xx
